The XIIIe Winter Olympics took place for the second time at Lake Placid (the United States of America), in 1980.

Organization

• City candidate: Vancouver - Garibaldi (Canada) which withdrew its candidature before the final vote.

• It is the second time that Lake Placid organizes the Winter Olympics. As in 1932, snow misses, but this time the snow-blowers are there to mitigate the insufficiencies of the weather.

Striking facts

• the American Eric Heiden, who had pronounced the Olympic Serment, becomes Olympic champion in the five tests of Speed skating.

• the skater Irina Rodnina obtains its third title in couple, but with two different partners.

• a family makes shine the colors of a very small country, the Liechtenstein. Whereas Andreas Wenzel gains the money of the giant slalom, his/her sister Hanni Wenzel gains the two slaloms and finishes second of the descent.

• the exploit of the American hockeyeurs which gain the gold medal by in particular beating the invincible team of the Soviets, this fact was in addition called “miracle on ice”.
