Winter Olympics of 1976

The XIIes Winter Olympics took place, for the second time in 12 years, with Innsbruck (Austria) in 1976.

Organization

  • Cities candidates: Denver (the USA), Sion (SUI), Tampere/Are (FINE) and Vancouver (EDGE).
  • It is the second time that the Plays proceed in this city; the first time in 1964. For this reason, two Olympic flames were lit.
  • the Olympic Games were allotted to the American city of Denver, but the population of the State of Colorado voted against the use of the public money to support the Plays. Innsbruck came then to the rescue and accommodated the event, twelve years only after its last Plays.

Striking facts

  • John Curry obtains to the highest score of the history of the figure skating Sirs.
  • the German skier Rosi Mittermaier passes very close carrying out the triplet in Alpine skiing. Victorious of the descent then slalom, it misses for twelve hundredths the title in giant slalom which would have enabled him to equalize Toni Sailer and Jean-Claude Killy. She sets out again however of Innsbruck with two gold medals and one of money.

  • Awaited by a whole people, the victory of Franz Klammer in descent is acquired at the end of a duel epic with the Olympic champion of Sapporo, Bernhard Russi. The Austrian exceeds 100 km/h of average on the layout.
