Winter Olympics of 1956

The Winter Olympics of 1956 , seventh of the name, took place with Cortina d' Ampezzo in Italy.

Organization

After a first attempt in 1952, the Italian station of Cortina d' Ampezzo carries the organization of the Plays vis-a-vis the others cities candidates of Colorado Springs (the United States), Lake Placid (the United States) and Montreal (Canada). It is the first time that Plays take place in Italy.

Striking facts

  • the Plays of Cortina were the first with being retransmis on television and the last to organize the competitions of figure skating outside.
  • the Austrian skier Toni Sailer gains the descent, the giant slalom and the special slalom, carrying out the first triplet of the history of the plays in Alpine skiing. The second was carried out by Jean-Claude Killy with the plays of Grenoble, in 1968.

  • the Soviet Union takes part for the first time in the plays of winter.

  • the Olympic oath is pronounced by a woman for the first time. It is the skier Giuliana Channel-Minuzzo who had this honor.
