The Winter Olympics of 1928 took place with Saint-Moritz, Suisse.
Organization
According to the International Olympic committee, the Netherlands, organizers of the Plays of summer in Amsterdam were to also organize these Plays of winter. In impossibility of doing it, the Swiss cities of Davos, Engelberg and Saint-Moritz go candidates. Saint-Moritz is finally indicated.
Striking facts
- the test of 10.000 meters in Speed skating is cancelled due to bad quality of the ice.
- Per Erik Hedlund (Sweden) gains the 50 km Ski touring with 13 minutes in advance on its dolphin.
- Following the risks weather (snow, strong wind, rain, thaw) and with problems of jury at the time of the tests of speed skating, the press wonders about the future of the Oympiques Plays of winter. The Miroir of the Sports French concludes the two pages thus that it devotes to the Plays in its edition of the February 21st 1928: “The incidents of the skating rink carried a very hard blow to the Winter Olympics, which perhaps will not be concerned any. ”
- Japan takes part for the first time in the Plays of winter, and it is also a first Asian presence.
- the skeleton makes its appariation with the Winter Olympics.
- Gillis Grafström (Sweden) gains its third consecutive gold medal in figure skating.
