Wing (bird)

The wings are the upper limbs Oiseau X. For many species, they allow the flight.

Description

The feathers of flight deployed on the wings are:

  • the Rémige S, which are fixed at the bones.
  • feathers of cover.

The Muscle S making it possible the wings to beat are the wing muscles which fit on the Bréchet (Sternum reinforced).

The feathers constituting the wings of a bird in flight, modify the profile of the wings permanently. The consequence is that the boundary layer remains “stuck”, making “slip” the wind relating to the Portance without making of excessive trail. incalculable Smoothness, effort quasi no one, moreover with each beat of the wing, the Tourbillon S are detached. The power necessary for the level flight is relatively weak. See also: Alula

According to the type of flight practiced, i.e. an active or planed flight, the efforts are not the same ones. Consequently, the species which practice the flight beaten like the trip hammer S and the hummingbirds saw them Humérus being reduced and their phalanges to lengthen because it is the " main" who is the propellent element in this type of vol. On the other hand the species practitioner the flight planed like the Marabout S and the Pélican S have the arm, the front armlever and the hand appreciably equal length in order to have the broadest possible scale.

This member with advanced starting from the traditional diagram of the Member chiridien of the Tétrapode S: the number of Doigts is tiny room to three, the Métacarpe S are welded, the Cubitus or ulna is developed more than the Radius. The feathers existed well before the birds can fly. The discovery in China of Dinosaure S with feathers which could not steal shows it. Their plumage is indeed incompatible with the vol. It is the conjunction of the modification of the skeleton and the preexistent presence of the feathers, which allowed the vol. In other term, in agreement with the theory of the evolution, certain species of birds could fly only when all the characteristics, whose wings are the result, were joined together.

Expressions

Several expressions use the wing term.
  • " With car of aile" mean by beating wing with energy, so as to accelerate the flight, so that to leave to car wing means to leave with energy, quickly. " To have ailes" , " to beat ailes" , " to deploy its ailes" each one their direction has.

Mythological symbolic system

The wings are a symbol of power and influence since the word Chaldée N indicating the power ( Abir ) is very close to that indicating a wing ( Aber ).

The historian Hérodote teaches us that the Assyrian king Cyrus Large the saw in dream the son of one of his princes, at the same moment in a province moved away, carrying two large wings with the épaules : one covered the Asia, the other the Europe. He concludes from it at once that he fomented a revolt against him. The symbols of the Babylonians were familiar for him, and if the wings were the symbol of the power (on the armies for example), the suspicions of disloyalty were completely natural.

Icare, character of the Greek Mythology, is the first man to have tried to fly with the assistance of wax wings.
