Guillaume II ( Willem van Oranje-Nassau or Orange-Nassau Guillaume) ($the Hague, December 6th 1792 - Tilburg, March 17th 1849).
He was prince d' Orange, king of the Netherlands, duke of Limbourg and large-duke of the Luxembourg of 1840 to 1849.
Wire of Guillaume Ier of the Netherlands and of Wilhelmine of Prussia, he married in 1816 the large-duchess Anna Pavlovna of Russia (1795 - 1865), (girl of Paul Ier of Russia).
From this union were born:
- Alexandre of Orange-Nassau (1818 - 1848);
- Henri of Orange-Nassau (1820 - 1879) which married in 1853 Amélie of Saxony-Weimar; widower, it married in 1878 Marie of Prussia (1855 - 1888);
- Sophie of Orange-Nassau (1824 - 1897) which married in 1842 Charles-Alexandre of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach (1818 - 1901).
Biography
It entered the British army during the Napoleonean wars and took part in the war of Spain like aide-de-camp of Wellington. It went back to the Netherlands in 1813. In 1815, it takes the command of the army Dutchwoman to fight Napoleon i during the Hundred Days. It takes share with the battles of Four-Arm and Waterloo at the sides of united.It reached the throne in October 1840 after the abdication of his father. Although it is personally preserving, it played moderation and granted a new constitution more liberal in 1848, after having taken fear of the revolutions which burst everywhere in Europe. This constitution is always into force today, with some modifications.
Guillaume II of the Netherlands belonged to the sixth branch (Nassau-Dietz) resulting from the second branch (Nassau-Dillenbourg) of the Maison of Nassau. This line of Nassau-Dietz today Orange-Nassau belongs to the stem ottonienne which gave stathouders to the Holland, the Frise, the Zealand, the Gueldre, a king with the England and the Scotland in the person of Guillaume III of Orange-Nassau, kings and queens with the Netherlands.
Guillaume II of the Netherlands is the ancestor of the queen Béatrix of the Netherlands.
