History

With the mouth of Wimereux, Vauban built one of the forts of protection of the littoral whose ruins, which were still drawn up in the middle of the sea until the years 1940, crumbled since.

Seaside resort created under the Second Empire, Wimereux took the name of the river which is thrown in the sea at the place where the city was built. The territory of Wimereux belonged at the origin with the commune of Wimille from which Wimereux was detached.

Wimereux constitutes a remarkable architectural whole of houses and typical buildings of the Belle time which continue to be maintained.

In the beginning second home of the easy families of Lille and Paris, Wimereux became since a score of years the residential suburbs of the agglomeration of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Wimereux attracts also British, Belgians and Russians who come to settle there.
