Egypt

  • Fall of the New Egyptian Empire.
  • Reign of Smendès (fine in -1054). Hérihor, large priest of Amon.
    • Hérihor, general probably of Libyan origin, become large priest of Amon, favorite of Ramsès XI, usurps the capacity and reigns on High-Egypt with Thèbes (- 1085) whereas the second vizier Smendès, bench with Tanis takes the title of Pharaon (XXI {{E}} dynasty tanite) and controls Low-Egypt. Two lines of Pharaons and large priests share the capacity until in -950. A subtle institutional balance is set up and the two capacities tie many family ties. In Thèbes, the load of “divine adoratrice”, occupied by a princess of royal blood becoming the morganatic wife of the god, established virgin, quickly becomes the institution representative of the royalty vis-a-vis the large priest, and profits from an important spiritual prestige.

Arts & cultures

  • Hérihor proclaims the era of “renewal of the births” (ouhem mesout), parallel with the cycle of the reign, conceived like a restoration of the cosmic order.

  • Against the plundering of the royal tombs, the large priests of Amon of XXIe dynasty are constrained to arrange hiding-places for the royal mummies with Deir el-Bahari.
