Wilson Pickett is an American singer of Soul and Rhythm and Blues born the March 18th 1941 with Prattville (Alabama), deceased the January 19th 2006 of an heart attack, in Reston (Virginia).

Biography

Beginning of career

The young person Wilson Pickett begins his career of singer as chorus-singer of Gospel in the church Baptist of Prattville. He was youngest of a family of 11 children, but regularly beaten by his mother, he leaves in 1955 to live with his father with Detroit in the Michigan at the time when the recognition begins from the American negro music thanks to the legendary label Tamla Motown.

Arrived at Détroit, it forms its first group of Gospel, The Violinaires . In 1961, it joined the group of R&B, The Falcons , which sought a new singer and in which takes part also Eddie Floyd, another future high-speed motorboat of the music Soul.

In 1962, Pickett is the first success within Falcons with I Found has coils , but to have recorded I Found shortly after has Love , it decides to launch out in a career solo, and in 1963 it joined the label of Lloyd Price : Double L Records . Pickett is then its first success as an artist solo with It' S too late - not to confuse with the title of Chuck Willis) - which will enter to the hit-parade the July 27th, 1963.

Successes

In 1964, Pickett accepts a contract at Atlantic Records of the Ertegun brothers, and starts to work with the guitarist Steve Cropper with whom they will create some successes of the drunk repertory of the music. It records in 1965, with the studio Stax Record' S of Memphis one of its most known titles, In the Midnight Hour - song included in the French-speaking music by Johnny Halliday, under the title of Until midnight . During its stay with Memphis, Pickett still records Don' T Fight It , 634-5789 and Ninety-Nine and One-Half (Won' T Do) , three original compositions that it coécrit with Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper. These titles remain regarded as the traditional ones of the music drunk person.

The next recordings proceed with the studios Fame , located in an old warehouse of tobacco at Muscle Shoals (Alabama). Pickett then records several great successes such as Mustang Sally , Funky Broadway , and Land off 1.000 Dances . Pickett also wrote songs recorded by artists such as Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Grateful Dead, Booker T. and the MGs, Genesis, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Hootie and the Blowfish, Echo and the Bunnymen, Roxy Music, Bruce Springsteen, Los Lobos, The Jam, Ani DiFranco, and others. In 1969, it signs a resumption of Hey Jude , a success of the Beatles and multiplies the rounds while creating other successes, of which Fine and Water and Don' T Let the Green Grass Fool You . It signs also a resumption of Sugar, Sugar of the Archies and records also Everybody Needs Somebody to Love , taken again by the Rolling Stones and the Blues Brothers.

Difficult years

In the Years 1970, with the success of the vagueness of the Music disco music, it disappears from the hits-parades, but continues a career of regard and works with Solomon Burke, Ben E. King and Joe Tex. In 1973, Pickett makes a choice which he will regret later: it leaves Atlantic Records to join RCA Records. After Take has Closer Look At The Woman You' Re With , which is found again in the Hit-parade American, Pickett continuous to record albums. Nevertheless success is not really any more with go.

Starting from the Years 1980, it has alcohol problems. That is worth some troubles with justice to him and to find itself several times in front of the courts for charges of driving under influence of intoxication and wearing of weapons. It takes part in brawls and is found in prison after having threatened a person with a firearm. In 1987, it is hospitalized following a brawl.

It is as in 1987 as it takes again In the Midnight Hours with the Motown and that the song is found again classified in the Hit-parade. It also continues to have many successes in Europe and takes part in the festivals of summer which are organized there.

However, devoting itself more and more to drink, Pickett must leave its house of Englewood (New Jersey) in January 1992 following unpaid rents. In April of the same year, whereas it leads in a state of intoxication, it seriously wounds a 86 year old elderly, and in 1993, it must purge custodial sentence a one year, supplied with a testing period during five years, consecutive with its traffic accident. He will be also condemned for drug possession.

Dedication

In 1991, Pickett is established within the Rock-and-roll Hall off Famed and two years later, the Rhythm and Blues Foundation will give the Pioneer Award to him. It is popularized like one of the heroes of the film Commitments of Alan Parker but without appearing with the image.

Pickett leaves its last album It' S Harder Now in 1999 and gave its last fine concert 2004.
