Willibrord of Utrecht
Holy Willibrord first bishop of Utrecht , apostle of the Netherlands, owner of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, was born towards 657 in Northumberland. He died into 739 and he rests in the Abbaye of Echternach of which he had been the founder. Festival the November 7th.
Willibrord is reproduced on the Canon history of the Netherlands, official list of 50 topics, initiative of the government Dutch, whose first version goes back to 2006 and whose second version officially is accepted on July 3rd 2007.
Brief biography
It receives a Christian education in the Abbaye of Rippon directed by saint Wilfrid. He becomes monk, then priest and goes to Ireland to perfect his monastic and intellectual education. In 690, it is sent in Plank, territory recently acquired by the Francs mérovingiens, to work there with the evangelization of the population. Willibrord goes to Rome to take the blessing of the pope then traverses a vast territory corresponding to the most maritime half of the current Netherlands. At the time of a second voyage to Rome, he is crowned bishop missionary and he decides to fix at Utrecht his episcopal see. He also traverses the Eastern Plank (current frontage of Germany on the North Sea) and arrives to the territory of the Danes. In Denmark it succeeds in converting only thirty children whom it is obliged to bring back with him to save a martyrdom to them certain. He was the friend of saint Lambert of Maastricht and the two saints bishops met periodically.
Patronage
Willibrord is patron saint of the Netherlands, the Clippings, and also of the children epileptics.
Representation
Saint Willibrord is usually represented as a bishop, with the attributes of his condition, but sometimes also as an abbot.Often associated with Boniface of Mainz it is distinguished some, parce it is represented beardless.
