Willibrord Benzler (October 16th 1853 - April 16th 1921), is the 101e bishop of Metz of 1901 with 1919.
Karl Benzler was born with Niederhemer, in Westphalia. He is the son of Karl Benzler and his wife Klementine, born Kissing. He makes his secondary studies with Attendorn, and Münster of 1867 with 1871, where he receives his examination. After studies of Architecture to Cologne, it changes orientation into December 1871 to study the Philosophie and the catholic Théologie at the university of Innsbruck. It integrates the Canisianum College in Automne 1872, held by Jésuites, but its entry in the order is refused in 1874. It then joined the Abbaye bénédictine of Beuron, and chooses the name of Willibrord. It is ordered priest the August 28th 1877.
After a short passage to the Emmaus abbey with Prague, and to the abbey of Seckau in Styrie, it is named first Abbé of the recently founded abbey Maria Laach the October 15th 1893. Although Benzler is in the discussions to become bishop of Cologne or Fulda, its nomination with the évêché of Metz, the September 21st 1901, seems a surprise. It is ordered the October 28th 1901.
After the First World War, the Diocèse of Metz becomes again French and to have a German bishop is not acceptable any more. He is thus relieved in January 1919. Its departure is officially accepted the July 10th and, the July 31st, it is named Archevêque of Attalie. It turns over to the Abbaye of Maria Laach and later to Beuron. Serious cardiac problems oblige it to go to the Abbaye cistercian of Baden-Baden - Lichtenthal to receive a medical help. He dies in 1921 with Baden-Baden, and is buried in the Abbaye of Beuron.
