William of the Pole

William of the Pole (October 16th 1396, Knitting machine, Suffolk - May 2nd 1450), count, marquis, then Duke of Suffolk, was one of the large English captains of the Guerre One hundred Year old.

It is also called in the chronicles of the William time of Poole known as " Guillaume Poule" , count de Suffort.

He was the grandson of William of the Pole, which was chancellor of Richard II of England.

He is seriously wounded at the time of the seat of Harfleur during which his/her father is killed. A few months later, his/her older brother, Michel, is killed with the Bataille of Azincourt and it is William who succeeds to him the head of the county. It jointly orders the English forces with the count of Salisbury and John Talbot at the time of the Siège of Orleans in 1428. The June 12th 1429, it is taken at the time of the attack against Jargeau by the troops of Jeanne d' Arc and will remain prisoner of Charles VII during three years.

Released in 1431, it becomes the ally of Henri Beaufort against Humphrey de Gloucester in its fight for the capacity. Henri Beaufort is for a truce with France. Suffolk negotiates the marriage of Henri VI with Marguerite of Anjou in 1444. Like reward, the king the pupil with the rank of marquis. At the same time, he marries Alice Chaucer, grand-daughter of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer. In 1434, he becomes lord of Wallingford.

In February 1447, it makes stop and probably carry out the uncle of the king, Humphrey de Gloucester. He is banished for five years but its boat taking it along to France is intercepted by a band soldiers dissatisfied belonging to the duke with Exeter which condemn it to dead and decapitate it on May 2nd, 1450.
