William Turner Thiselton-Dyer

William Turner Thiselton-Dyer is a British Botaniste , born the July 28th 1843 with Westminster and dead the December 23rd 1928 with Whitcombe.

He is the son of William George Thiselton-Dueyr and Catherine Jane born Firminger. He makes his studies in King' S College of London of 1861 with 1863 then with CH Christ. of Oxford of 1863 with 1865 where it obtains its Bachelor off Sciences, its Master off Arts, its Doctorat off Laws, its Doctorat off Sciences and its pH. D.

It Marie with Harriet Ann Hooker in 1877, girl of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911), director of the royal Botanical gardens of Kew. He teaches the Natural history at the royal school of agriculture of Cirencester starting from 1868, then the Botanique with the Royal College of Dublin of 1877 with 1872, at the royal school of Horticulture of Southern Kensington of 1872 with 1875.

Thiselton-Dyer becomes the assistant of the director of the royal Botanical gardens of Kew in 1875, director in 1885, function which it preserves until his retirement in 1905. It founds the bulletin of the Gardens in 1887.

Member various learned societies, in particular of the Royal Society (of which he is vice-president in 1896 - 1897). He is in particular the author of Flora off Middlesex (1869) with Henry Trimen (1843-1896) and supervises the edition of How Crops are Crown and translated with Alfred William Bennett (1833-1902) the work of Julius von Sachs (1832-1897), Lehrbuch DER botanik in 1875. He also publishes:

  • Essays one the endowment off research (1876);
  • Biologia centrali-americana: however, Contributions to the knowledge off the fauna and Flora off Mexico City and Central America (1879 with 1888);
  • with William Henry Harvey (1811-1866) Flora Carpensis (1896 with 1925);
  • Icons Plantarum (1896 with 1906);
  • Flora off Tropical Africa (1897 with 1913;
  • and with Robert Allen Rolfe (1855-1921) Orchidaceae in Flora off tropical Africa (1898).

It contributes to the names of plants to the Greek-English lexicon carried out by Henry George Liddell (1811-1898) and Robert Scott (1811-1877) with other works on the Greek and the Latin .
