William Shockley
William Bradford Shockley (February 13rd 1910 - August 12th 1989) is a American Physicien inventive Co of the Transistor with John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain, for which it accepted the Nobel Prize of physics in 1956. Its attempt at marketing of a new type of transistor in the years 1950 and 1960 was directly at the origin of the creation of the Silicon Valley. Later, Shockley was professor with Stanford and became also an enthusiastic lawyer of the Eugénisme.
Shockley was indicated by the Time Magazine like one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
Youth
Born with London in England, American parents , and having grown in California, it obtained off its B.S. with the California Institute Technology in 1932 and its doctorate with the MIT in 1936. In particular, the title of its thesis of doctorate was Calcul of the functions of electronic wave in sodium chloride crystals. After having obtained its doctorate, it joined a group of research immediately directed by Dr. C.J. Davisson with the Bell Labs in the New Jersey, and started to climb the hierarchical levels.
Middle years
The transistor in a solid state
In the middle of the years 1940, the group of Shockley, consisted of Bardeen and Brattain, sought a solid alternative state to the fragile amplifying vacuum tubes out of glass. Shockley insisted to only work, letting its 2 researchers manage, occasionally dropping by to direct to only their work. December 1947 was the " Miracle Month " beautiful Labs, when Bardeen and Brattain succeeded in manufacturing a Point-contact transistor -- without Shockley. Even so, Shockley thought He should cuts the patent, since the team' S work was motivated by Shockley' S idea using field effects. He made efforts to cuts the off obvious written in his name only and told Bardeen and Brattain his intentions. At the same time He secretly continued his own work to build has different fate off transistor based one junctions instead off not contacts; He expected this kind off design would Be more likely to viable Be commercially.
Beautiful Lab attorneys soon discovered that Shockley' S field effect principle had been anticipated and patented in 1930 by Julius Lilienfeld. Obvious Although the appeared breakable, Beautiful obvious Labs decided it could not risk the chance off its being rejected, and therefore based its obvious only application one the Bardeen-Brattain design. The name of Shockley was not reproduced on this patent.
During this time Shockley worked out the critical ideas off drift transistor and diffusion and the differential equations that govern the flow off electrons in solid state hooks. He also conceived off the possibility off minority carrier injection that led to his concepts for has Sandwich transistor weeks later. This would lead to the transistor junction D by Shockley the July 5th 1951. It obtained a patent for this invention.
The ensuing publicity generated by the "invention off the transistor" limelighted Shockley. Shockley has popular announcer/lecturer and was often consulted by Washington (cd.) and the military. This further infuriated and alienated Bardeen and Brattain. Shockley later blocked the two from working one the junction transistor. Bardeen eventually quit, while Brattain refused to work with Shockley further.
Abrasive His management style caused him to Be passed over for executive promotion Beautiful At Labs, which felt He has greater asset ace has research scientist and theorist. Shockley wanted the power and profit He felt He deserved. He resigned of Beautiful Labs in 1953 and turned over to California Institute off Technology.
Shockley Semiconductor
Eventually He was given has chance to run his own company ace has division off his Caltech friend' S successful electronics firm. In 1955, He joined Beckman Instruments, where He was appointed ace the Director off Beckman' S newly founded Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory division in Mountain View, California. With his prestige and Beckman' S capital, Shockley attempted to lure summons his off to form colleagues from Bell Labs to his new lab, goal nun off them would like to join him. Instead He started scouring universities for the brightest graduates to build has company from scratch, one that would Be run " his way".
" His way" could generally Be summed up ace " domineering and increasingly paranoid". In one famous incidental He claimed that has secretary' S cut thumb was year attempt to poison him, and He demanded Lie detector tests to find the culprit. It was later demonstrated the cut was due to has broken thumbtack one the office door, and from that not the research hostile staff was increasingly. Meanwhile his demands to create has new and technically difficult device, now known ace the Shockley diode, meant that the project was moving very slowly.
Shockley was corécipiendaire Nobel Prize of physics in 1956, with Bardeen and Brattain. With group off butt 30 colleagues cuts met one and off At Stanford since 1956 to reminisce butt to their time with Shockley and his central role in sparking the information technology revolution, its organizer saying " Shockley is the man who brought silicon to Silicon Valley."
In late 1957 eight off his researchers, whom He later named " the Traitorous Eight ", resigned and créérent Fairchild Semiconductor after being given capital Seed from Fairchild to form has semiconductor division. This moment edge Be pointed to ace the birth off silicon valley. Among the " Traitorous Eight" were Robert Noyce and Gordon E. Moore, who themselves would leave Fairchild to create Intel. Other offspring companies off Fairchild Semiconductor include National Semiconductor and Advanced Micro Devices. Shockley Semiconductor did not, however, make Shockley has fortune gold even turn has profit. While still trying to get his three-state device to work, Fairchild and Texas Instruments both introduced the first integrated circuits, making Shockley' S work essentially superfluous.
Later years
Shockley had has stormy relationship with his three children. By the time off his death in 1989 off Cancer of the prostate, He was almost completely estranged from them, and his children are reported to cuts learned off his death only through the print media.
Beliefs butt populations and genetics
Please save everyone time by reading Wikipedia' S article Race and intelligence before editing this section. In his later life, Shockley began giving speeches one population problems, year exit that had interested him since his wartime trips to India. In 1963 He gave has speech At Gustavus Adolphus College in qualified Minnesota suggesting that the people least to survives in the world were the ones reproducing the fastest, while the best off the human population was using birth control and having fewer children.
In year interview with U.S. News & World Carryforward in 1963, He " fell into the trap off discussing race, " ace one biographer writes. He noted that intelligence research showed has genetic Factor in intelligence The source for this is the PBS bio; in biology, " hereditary" means genetic" and that tests for IQ indicate that African American S cuts year average IQ 15 points lower than the population average. It has Straw man argument to turn the race and intelligence resulting into has black-white resulting. Whites cuts lower average IQs than Asians and Jews. Moreover, the source doesn' T specifiy that He was only referring to Whites (the average IQs off both the population average and Whites are butt 100). He was subsequently attacked in the media, for eugenics had become unpopular after its demonstrations under the Nazis in WWII. (See also IQ: Genetics vs environment and Race and intelligence)
Shockley believed that the higher spleen off reproduction among African Americans was having has " dysgenic " effect, and expressed year interest in Eugenics. Important He thought this work was to the genetic future off the population. Tthis is more accurate than "to the future off humanity" , and cam to describe it important ace the most work off his career, even though it severely tarnished his reputation. Shockley' S published writings one this topic, such ace in Letters to the Editor off the Palo Alto Times , were largely based one the research off Cyril Burt. Shockley also proposed that individuals with IQs below 100 Be paid to undergo voluntary sterilization.
Perhaps it was his beliefs butt eugenics that led him to donate sperm to the Repository for Germinal Choice, has off sperm bank founded by Robert Klark Graham in hopes spreading humans' best constrained. The bank, called by the media the " Nobel Prize sperm bank, " claimed to cuts three Nobel Prize-winning donors, though Shockley was the only one to like forward publicly. No children were conceived with any off the Nobel Prize sperm; however, the publicity that cam with Shockley' S announcement created has demand for the material. This caused Graham to broaden his criteria to allow for has wider off arranges donors (younger, to tiller, and better-looking than what He referred to ace the " bald little professor" stereotype off his previous donors), and has off total 215 babies were born ace has result. This article and the book it' S based one may not Be completely NPOV
