William Kingdon Clifford (May 4th 1845 - March 3rd 1879) is a Mathématicien and Philosophe English. He is the father with Hermann Grassmann of what one calls the geometrical Algèbre, which is a particular case of Algèbre of Clifford. He is as the first to be considered as the gravitation can be modelled by a space of variable Courbure. In philosophy, it develops the concept of " substance mentale".
Biography
William Clifford is born with Exeter and follows her schooling in this city, in a private school. It continues its studies with the Royal College from London and Cambridge. In 1871, he is mathematics professor with the University College of London and, in 1874, becomes a member of the Royal Society. He is also member of the metaphysical company. In 1875, it marries Lucy Lane of which it will have two girls. In 1876, its health worsens and he dies in 1879 in Madeira of respiratory problems.
Geometry
Its contemporaries regard it as a man of an extraordinary perspicacity and a great originality, endowed with a speed of spirit, able to be expressed in an effective style but impresses poetry. In geometry, it is a precursor in a form of geometry which moves away from the analytical Geometry practiced by his/her colleagues of Cambridge. In its Graph theory, or its geometrical representation of the algebraic functions, it develops ideas which will be taken up and exploited per many others. It is also interested in the universal algebra, the not-Euclidean geometry and the elliptic functions. Its publications on the Biquaternion S (1873) and the surfaces of Riemann (1877) make authority. It also publishes in 1878 a
classification of the loci . Its other publications relate to the algebraic forms and the projective Géométrie.
It is at the scalar origin of the words of Produit and Product vector.
Philosophy
Clifford is an idealist influenced by Spinoza. It is at the origin of two concepts: that of " substance mentale" and that of “tribal self-service”. This last expression specifies the key of its ethics: the conscience and the laws morals are built by the development in each individual of a
me which pushes it to adopt a behavior contributing to the good being of the group. Its philosophy is connected with that of Hermann von Helmholtz and Ernst Mach.
