William Joseph Levada
William Joseph Levada is Archevêque of the Roman Catholic church of American nationality , created cardinal in 2006.
Born the June 15th 1936 with Long Beach, in California, of Portuguese ascent and Irish. It is ordered priest the December 20th 1961.
It is ordered bishop the May 12th 1983 and receives the auxiliary load of bishop of Los Angeles. The September 21st 1986, Levada is named archbishop of Portland. In 1987, It takes part with six other bishops in the drafting of the compendium (summarized) of the Catéchisme of the Catholic church. The December 27th 1995, he becomes archbishop of San Francisco and by là-même, Métropolite of the ecclesiastical Province of San Francisco. In November 2000, he becomes member of the Congrégation for the doctrines of the faith, whose prefect is Joseph Ratzinger. Lastly, when this one becomes pope under the name of Benoît XVI, it names it the May 13rd 2005 prefect of the Congrégation for the doctrines of the faith, and creates it cardinal on February 22nd, 2006, under Sainte-Marie in Domnica ( S. Maria in Domnica ).
Defender of a strict orthodoxy on the security questions, in agreement with the positions of the the Vatican, Mgr Levada thus battled against the town hall of San Francisco, liberal bastion and stronghold of the American gay movement, against the Homosexual marriage, but also any type of partnership recognized between people of the same sex. In the same way, he refused in his diocese the communion with the catholic American politicians who support the right to the abortion or the euthanasia. However, he was not opposed to the existence of the parish of Most Holy Redeemer Church of San Francisco, composed primarily of faithful gay and lesbians.
