William John Burchell

William John Burchell is a British Naturaliste , born towards 1782 with Fulham and dead the March 23rd 1863 with Mexico City.

He is the son of Matthew Burchell. He obtains in 1834 off a Doctorat Civil Laws in 1834 with Oxford. He studies the Botanique with St Helena of 1805 with 1810. In 1810, it continues its studies with the Cape. Of 1811 with 1815, it travels in South Africa to collect there specimens of Natural history. It makes appear two volumes on its voyages in Africa in 1822. It constitutes during its voyages a collection of 50.000 specimens.

In 1825, it is with Lisbon. Of 1825, it arrives at Rio de Janeiro where there remains one year. Of 1826 with 1829, it travels in the Brazilian forests where it piles up immense collections moreover 15.000 specimens of plants and insects.

He is member of the Société linnéenne of London. He describes many news species S (of which some will be dedicated to him) and made many astronomical observations and meterologic. After its death, the essence of its collections are bequeathed to the Natural history museum of Oxford.
