William Jason Morgan
William Jason Morgan , (October 10th 1935 -) is a American geophysicist having made important contributions in the field of the Plate tectonics and Géodynamique.
Career
After having received its B.Sc with the Georgia Institute off Technology in 1957, it continues its studies with the Université Princeton where it obtains its pH. D. in 1964 under the supervision of Robert Dicke. It continues to work in Princeton immediately afterwards. Its first major contribution, towards the end of the Years 1960, enables him to bind the magnetic anomalies observed of share and others of the médio-oceanic Ride and the Plate tectonics .Starting from 1971 it works on the theory of the plumes ( feather ) of Tuzo Wilson which postulates the existence of current of convection coarsely cylindrical going up in the coat and producing the hot spots. Morgan applies this concept to Hawaii and thus explains why the underwater Mont of the chain volcanic are old proportionally with the distance from Hawaii. This concept was applied to other hot spots and by other geologists.
Morgan receives several rewards, inter alia the medal Alfred Wegener of European Union off Geosciences (1983), the price Maurice Ewing of the American Geophysical Union (1987), the Médaille Wollaston of the Geological Society off London (1994) and the National Medal off Science (2003).
