William George Screw
William George Maton is a Médecin and a British Naturaliste , born the January 31st 1774 with Salisbury and dead the March 30th 1835 with Spring Gardens.
His/her father is a famous wine merchant. Impassioned very early by nature, at ten years it draws the attention of the reverend Thomas Rackett (1756-1840). It meets soon Charles Hatchett (1765-1847), future chemist, with whom it will tie a friendship which will last all their life. It is thanks to him that Maton meets the doctor Richard Pulteney (1730-1801), who persuades it to give up the idea to enter the orders to become doctor.
He enters in Queen' S College of Oxford in July 1790. He follows then the courses of the botanists Aylmer Bourke Lambert (1761-1842) and John Sibthorp (1758-1796) and becomes the assistant of this last. He accompanies it during his herborizings which will make it possible Sibthorp to make appear its Flora Oxoniensis .
Screw becomes member of the Société linnéenne of London the March 18th 1794 at only 21 years. He ties there a friendly relation with botany Sir James Edward Smith (1759-1828). It is interested in the shells and it is besides on this subject that it makes its first presentation in the reports of the Company the year even of its admission. This one will be followed of good of others, always on current or fossil molluscs. It is also interested in the history and is one of the first to give a precise study of Stonehenge.
Once its title of doctor of medicine obtained, it enters to Westminster Hospital under the direction of Sir Alexander Crichton (1763-1856). The royal family remaining in Gloucester Lodge, one of the princesses being interested in botany discovers a grass which she did not know, Calamagrostis epigejos (L.) Roth, 1788. One mentions then with the queen, Charlotte-Sophie de Mecklenbourg-Strelitz (1744-1818), Dr. Maton. Thus it is submitted to the court. It becomes a few years later the extraordinary doctor of the Charlotte queen but also her confidant.
In 1801, it inherits the rich person library of his friend, Doctor Pulteney, and Screw conceives a few years later, in 1805, the plan of his work has General View off the Writings off Linnæus . In 1809, the private exercise of medicine occupies it as much as Maton must leave his functions in Westminster Hospital.
It makes off appear articles of medicines in the principal reviews of its time like Medical Transactions the Royal College off Physicians off London or The London Medical and Physical Journal .
His/her father dies in 1816 sifted debts, approximately 20.000 Guineas, that his/her son refunds in 1827.
