William Forsell Kirby is a Entomologiste and a specialist in the British Folklore , born the January 14th 1844 with Leicester and dead the November 20th 1912 with London.

It makes its studies near a tutor and very early is interested in the butterfly S. It makes appear, as of 1862, small a Manual off European Butterflies .

In 1867, it becomes preserving Muséum of the royal Société of Dublin. Kirby makes appear in 1871 off a Synonymic Catalog Diurnal Lepidoptera which it supplements in 1877.

In 1879, it joined the personnel of the British Museum as assistant after the death of Frederick Smith (1805-1879). It makes off appear then several catalogs of S like Rhopalocera Exotica (1887 - 1897) as well as a Elementary Text-book Entomology . It takes its retirement in 1909.

Kirby is interested on many subjects and is Polyglotte. He is the first English translator of the Finnish epopee Kalevala.

Its standard S is preserved today at the Muséum of natural history of London and part of its collection with national natural history museum of Dublin.
