William Cavendish (4th duke of Devonshire)

William Cavendish (about 1720 - October 2nd, 1764), 4th Duc of Devonshire, knight of the Jumper, member of the private Conseil, called Lord Cavendish de Hardwick before 1729, then marquis de Hartington between 1729 and 1755, was a British statesman of the left whig which was briefly Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1756 - 1757) and Lord lieutenant d' Irlande (1755 - 1757).

Biography

William Cavendish was elected member of the Parliament for the Derbyshire in 1741 and 1747, but in 1751 it left the House of Commons for the House of Lords, where it was Baron Cavendish de Hardwick, and entered to the private Council. It was Lord lieutenant d' Irlande (viceroy) from April 2nd, 1755 to January 3rd, 1757, when its successor, John Russell, 4th Duc of Bedford, took up duty.

After having inherited peerages of his father (mainly the title of Duc of Devonshire), it was made Chevalier of the Jumper and named First Lord with the Treasury in November 1756 (the majority of the historians consider that he was Prime Minister during these functions) and he was nominally First Lord until May 1757, function actually exerted by William Pitt Old the. In 1762, it entered to the private Conseil of Ireland.

He married Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle, baroness Clifford (1731-1754), girl and heiress of Richard Boyle, 3rd Count de Burlington, famous architect and collector of Article By her, Devonshire inherited the Chiswick House and the Burlington House in London; Abbey of Bolton and Londesborough Hall in the Yorkshire; and of the Castle of Lismore in the County of Waterford in Ireland. The duke employed Capability Brown to arrange the garden and the park with Chatsworth House, his main home. He engaged James Paine to design the new stables.

The duke had four children:

  • William Cavendish (1748-1811), which succeeded to him
  • Lady Dorothy Cavendish (1750-1794). Married to William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland cement, which became also Prime Minister.
  • Lord Richard Cavendish (1752-1781)
  • George Augustus Henry Cavendish (1754-1834), created 1st Count de Burlington. The grandson of Lord Burlington, the 2nd count de Burlington, was to become later the 7th duke of Devonshire.
