William Adama

Family

William Adama was born on the colony Caprica. It is resulting from a family which resembles to the average American families: his/her mother, Evelyn, were accountant; in the episode Révolution it is mentioned that his/her father, the lawyer Joseph Adama, was specialist in the civic rights, which explains why it is shocked by the drives out with the witches carried out in the name of the fight anti-terrorist.

Its love life follows a scenario also rather banal: at the end of the first war against let us cylons, it Marie with her love of childhood, Caroline Adama, with which it have two wire, Zak and Lee. He divorces then remarie.

Stoical man public, it does not reveal anything of his feelings in spite of a series of private dramas: its young person sons, Zak, little endowed, obtains its license of pilot thanks to the favor of his instructor, Kara “Starbuck” Thrace, with which it has a connection. He is crushed during an operational flight. This tragedy scrambles Adama with his/her Lee oldest son, who shows it to have pushed Zak in the military career. His second wife disappears at the time of the attack of the colonies by cylons.

Several episodes show however that the admiral hides a tender heart: at the time of the funeral of Zak, it became acquainted with Thrace that it comes from there to regard as his own daughter. The young woman reproaches herself for having sent Zak to death; she conceived such a culpability of it that she does not forgive any more any failure with the pilots whom she trains and which the fleet however needs hopelessly. When Adama discovers the truth on the death of Zak it is hard towards Thrace, but its true feelings betray it when it realizes that it failed to lose it in a confrontation with cylons. Its relationship with his/her Lee son shows it torn between its paternal love, its aggravation in front of somebody whom it includes/understands badly and its principles: Lee will be treated like any subordinate, even if it costs some his father to shut down it; the last episode of season 1 shows the two men devoting itself to a friendly boxing match to the image of a difficult relation, mixing affection and aggressivity. The setting in scene regularly underlines the ambiguity of their reports/ratios.

Career

The career and the profile of the admiral resemble much those of great figures of the American military history of the 20th century, like Douglas MacArthur or George Patton.

Adama begins its career in the colonial forces as a pilot of Viper when the first war against the cylon S. It bursts is a talented pilot and a marksman. It acquires the nickname “Husker” because of its raucous voice ( husky in English). It is transferred on the Battlestar Atlantia as a lieutenant; it is there that it carried out sound: 1000e landing, which seems to be become legendary since lieutenant Thrace tells it like a piece of anthology in the episode Confession .

The career of Adama stagnates after the end of the war like that of a good number of American heroes of the First World War. It is useful on a commercial cargo liner, where it binds friendship with Saul Tigh. Like Mac Arthur, It makes play the relations of the family of his second wife in the Council of Defense to be reinstated in the fleet with Tigh and both advance quickly in the hierarchy; Adama becomes ordering battlestar Galactica and Tigh second in command.

The new series begins two years after these events, when Adama must face a decisive test. Let us cylons launch an attack surprised on the Twelve Colonies and destroys the majority of the fleet Coloniale at the time when the ceremony takes place inaugurating the transformation into museum of a growing old Galactica .

Protected by its obsolete systems and the rigorous security measures adopted by Adama, the Galactica appears safe from a takeover of cylons. Moreover, because of its reconversion in museum, the Galactica has forty old Viper Mk. II, also impossible to control by let us cylons.

The vessel having been disarmed, Adama has of another choice initially only to flee direct confrontation and to gain the Ragnar station to rearm. In way it crosses a heteroclite fleet of civil vessels with approximately: 50000 survivors, of which Laura Roslin, new president of the Colonies, who begs it to give up her plan of revenge against cylons to escort the survivors in sure place. After some hesitations, Adama overcomes its reserves and orders with the fleet to jump beyond the red line (imaginary limit of the jumps known PRL).

The colonial fleet discovers lost planet Kobol; Adama charges lieutenant Sharon Valerii with making jump the vessel-mother cylon who protects the access to planet; with its return Valerii, which is a agent cylon car on Adama as it was programmed to do it, leaving it seriously wounded. He survives the experiment but in radically changed fate
