Willem van Saeftinghe

Willem van Saeftinghe was a Frère convers of the Abbaye cistercian of Ter Doest living at the 14th century.

During the Battle of the gold spurs in 1302, it désarçonna the captain of the French army , Robert II of Artois, which was then killed by others. This phase of the battle was the object of a fabric of Nicaise de Keyser, exposed to Courtrai until it was lost in 1944 during a bombardment. One can still see a study with the Groeningemuseum of Courtrai. It killed during the battle several French knights. The chroniclers of the time insist on the fact that it was large and strong. It had arrived on the battle field at horse, before exchanging its mounting for a Goedendag and a sword.

During the revolt of the brothers alluvium of 1308 it assassinated the célérier and it wounded the abbot. Vis-a-vis the partisans of the abbot, Willem took refuge in the church of Lissewege. When the news reached Bruges Jan Breydel and a son of Pieter de Coninck got under way with 80 other Brugeans to deliver it.

Later, the pope Clément V the excommunicated and sent it in Croisade. In 1309 its misdeeds were forgiven, but it was obliged to engage in a hospital Ordre. He would have perished Lord of the seat of Rhodos.

A bronze statue of him of Jef Claerhout is since 1988 on the place of Lissewege.
