Willem Piso

Willem Piso (1611 - 1675) was a Médecin and a Naturaliste Dutch which led a scientific mission of exploration to the Brésil

Charged by Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, governor-general of the Dutch colony of Brazil, it trains a team of scientists, in particular Georg Markgraf (1611-1644), and artists Frans Post (1612-1680) and Albert Eckhout (1610-1665), with an aim of discovering the geography of the country and of emphasizing his richnesses.

He makes appear the fruit of this research in 1648 under the title of Historia naturalis Brasiliae…: in qua not tantum plantae and animalia, sed and indigenarum morbi, ingenia and mores describuntur and iconibus supra quingentas it . In fact, after the death of Johannes de Laet (1581-1649), it rewrites all the part devoted to the Natural history and makes disappear the name from Georg Markgraf, the true author, of the later editions. Engravings accompanying the work became so summary, that the determination specifies quoted species was delicate, until the redécouverte of the 133 originals in 1786.
