Wilhelm von Tegetthoff

Wilhelm Freiherr von Tegetthoff (born the December 23rd 1827 with Maribor - died the April 7th 1871 with Trieste) was Admiral in the Marine Austro-Hungarian. It ordered the fleet of the the North Sea, at the time of the Guerre of the Duchies of 1864, and the Guerre austro-Prussian of 1866. He is often regarded as one of the best officers naval officers of the end of the 19th century, because of his tactical inventiveness and of his direction of the command.

Descendant of a family of the Westphalian nobility , wire of major Karl von Tegetthoff, it enters to the maritime college of Venice, the July 23rd 1845. It embarks on a Linership, dice its exit of school, the April 16th 1849, and takes part in the Austrian blockade of Venice, the August 4th. It is promoted Lieutenant, on June 16th 1851, and Lieutenant commander, the November 16th 1852. He becomes in December , staff officer 1857 and is promoted Commander, the April 27th 1860 and Captain the November 23rd 1861. In 1862, one entrusts the command to him of the squadron of Raising. It leaves then for the North Sea. Although beaten, with the battles of Heligoland to the head of the forces austro-Prussians, it nevertheless obtains her rank of Rear-admiral and the command of the fleet autro-Hungarian woman, the May 9th 1866, right before the release of the hostilities to the Italy, at the time of the Guerre austro-Prussian. In spite of the Italian superiority, it carries out a raid of recognition against Ancône, on June 27th, and is opposed to the attempt at unloading on the island of Vis, while causing and gaining a brilliant victory with the Bataille of Smoothed. Accommodated as hero, he falls ill while going in Austria and dies abruptly the April 7th 1871.
