Wilhelm Uhde
Wilhelm Uhde (born in 1874, deceased in 1947) is a collector, galerist and German critic art .
Born with Friedeberg, it makes studies of Right to Munich and in Suisse, before going in Italy, and in particular with Florence, where it is devoted to the history of art, writes its first esthetic novels and tests. It tries to reconcile in him the unit of “ the vertical gréco-allemande of the melancholy and the horizontal Romance one of the satisfaction ”.
It settles with Paris in 1904, where “ the beauty was omniprésente ”; it there is accommodated by Erich Klossowski, meets Ambroise Vollard, Kahnweiler, the Stein, etc It starts to buy works of Pablo Picasso and of Georges Braque, still unknown, for its gallery with Montparnasse. It contributes to also make know the naive Peinture, and in particular works of Henri Rousseau. It Marie with Sonia Terk, which leaves it for Robert Delaunay.
As from 1908, it exposes works of the impressionist and the cubists. In 1914, its splendid collection is confiscated by the French State, then sold. He will however be delighted, until the end of his life, with the only reading of the catalog of this sale!
In Germany of Weimar, he fights for the Pacifisme, engages in certain youth movements. But its country, again, becomes to him intolerable, and it turns over in France in 1924. This time, it starts to collect those which it will call the “ new primitifs ”. Unfortunately, France, in these black years, is hardly hospital: not obtaining French nationality, he remains stateless person. He publishes “Picasso and the French tradition” in 1928, where he develops the idea that “Gothic mentality” would have been born with the junction from the Germanic spirit from the Francs and that of the Gallo-Romans; Picasso would answer the Gothic, and Directs, more with the novel.
Of Jewish origin , it becomes during the Second world war the foreseeable victim of the Nazis, to which it however manages to escape (Jean Cassou protects it a few months).
He dies in Paris in 1947.
