Wilayas d\' Algérie
The Algérie is divided into forty-eight Territorial collectivities called Wilaya S .
The wilaya, envisaged by article 15 of the Algerian constitution, is a territorial community equipped with the legal entity and financial autonomy.
It constitutes also an administrative unit of the Algerian State. It is equipped with an assembly elected called APW “Popular Assembly of Wilaya” and placed under the authority of a wali (Préfet).
The number carried by each Wilaya finds on the number plates like in the first two figures of the zip codes.
The wilayas are divided into Daïra S, which are divided, in their turn, in common.

At the independence of the country, the old French departments are preserved. 17, they are famous wilayas by the ordinance of 1968.

During the war of independence of Algeria, FLN adopts a system of organization made up of 6 wilayas :

- Algiers
- Oran
- the Sahara
The metropolitan France is regarded sometimes as a seventh wilaya .
