Wilaya of Algiers

The wilaya of Algiers (in Arab: ولايةالجزائر) is a principal territorial division of the Algérie, resulting from old the French department of Algiers.

Its prefecture is Algiers. It is populated of 2.562.428 inhabitants (census 1998).

History

The territory of the area of Algiers always included/understood the agricultural rich person area of the Mitidja which provided to the port all its richnesses. The first modern administrative delimitation of Algiers dates from the Othoman era under the regency of Algiers. It is Hassan Pasha which for better managing the provinces decides to create the beyliks of Titteri in the center (1548), of Mazouna in the west (1565) and that of Constantine in the east (in 1567).

  • August 2nd 1997, creation of the Governorship of Large Algiers (GGA) which replaces the wilaya with at its head a Minister-Governor who will be Cherif Rahmani.

Whereas the wilaya counted 33 communes, the governorship passes to 57 communes by integrating districts of the wilayas of Tipaza, Blida and Boumerdes.
  • 2000, dissolution of the GGA due to unconstitutionality of the new structure. Algiers is again a wilaya while keeping its new territory of 57 communes.
