Wikimapia
WikiMapia is a project inspired by Google Maps and Wikipédia, intended for “to chart and describe the Planet Ground” seen by satellite. WikiMapia uses the satellite sights of Google Maps and makes it possible to annotate them with a system Wiki. The Russian Alexandre Koriakine and Evgeniy Saveliev launched this project the May 24th 2006.
Description
The interface Web makes it possible to visualize the sights as in Google Maps, but it also makes it possible to add annotations, to modify them and carry out research on these annotations (for example: “Atomium” or “opera Sydney”).The user traverses the sights through the interface Google Maps. Rectangles are posted in superposition of the Carte S, and the user can click to above obtain information in connection with the indicated place. This information can exist in several Langue S and be modified by the user as on a Wiki. One can also ask for the suppression of the annotation.
Google Maps proposes three types of sights: chart, satellite and hybrid. WikiMapia introduces the sight “car” which is a mixture of hybrid for the wide areas and satellite sight for more brought closer sights.
The August 16th 2006, a million places had been identified. The October 2nd, the number exceeded 1,6 million and two million the November 22nd 2006. It reaches 3,8 million in May 2007 places, and certain Net surfers put questions about the real purpose of Wikimapia and its possible commercial recovery (in particular for research), its real goals not being clearly exposed.
36 Langue S are supported.
