Wightman Cup

The Wightman Cup is a competition of female Tennis which, of 1923 with 1989, opposed each year the the United States to the Great Britain.

Created on the model of the Coupe Davis on the initiative of Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman (which wanted to increase the attractivity of female tennis), Wightman Cup was initially played the even years with the stage of Wimbledon and the odd years with Forest Hills. The refusal of the United States Tennis Association and of the Lawn Tennis Association to make take part other countries (in particular the Australia) finally led to the creation of the Coupe of the Federation (Fed Cup) which will put at the catches all the nations starting from 1963.

The trophy, a silver vase, was precisely offered by Hotchkiss Wightman.

Each meeting was played best of the seven matches, that is to say five simple and two doubles.

The February 20th 1990, the USTA and the Lawn Tennis Association jointly announced the suspension of the test for a “unlimited duration”, because of the disinterest of the public after uninterrupted long series of American victories.

The United States gained it fifty and once against ten for the United Kingdom.
