Wifredo Óscar of Concepción Lam there Castilla , known as Wifredo Lam (sometimes spelled wrongly Wilfredo ) (Sagua Large the, Cuba, 1902 - Paris 1982) French of cuban origin is a surrealist painter.

Biography

Wifredo Lam was born the December 8th 1902 in the village from Sagua Large the with Cuba. His/her father was commercial Chinese of Canton established in Cuba. He had more quatre-vingts-quatre years with the birth of his eighth and last child, Wifredo Lam. The mother of Wifredo Lam was Mulâtre. Of 1918 with 1923, it attends the school of beautiful arts of Havana. At the beginning of the autumn of the year 1923, it embarks for the Spain where it will live 14 years. In 1929, it marries Eva Piris, Spanish Estrémadure. A child is born to them the following year. In 1931, Eva and its son die of the Tuberculose. In 1938, Pablo Picasso becomes acquainted with Wifredo Lam to which it introduces all his/her friends (Joan Miró, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Paul Éluard, Georges Braque…). In 1940, André Breton proposes to him to illustrate her book “Fata morgana”. In 1941, it leaves the Europe for Cuba with André Breton which, wishes to him outward journey with New York. But, while he thought of finding his native island, he is interned during 40 days on an small island inhabitant of Martinique. Despite everything, it will become acquainted with Aimé Césaire, of which he will become the friend. After a voyage 7 months, it arrives at Cuba in 1942. After having remained 10 years in the island, it decides at 50 years to leave to settle definitively with Paris. He dies the September 11th 1982 with Paris at the 80 years age.
