Whorl (city)

Spire ( German Speyer in ) is a city and a district in the south of the Land of the Rhineland-Palatinat. It counts 50  000 inhabitants.

History

Whorl is old a imperial Ville, its imposing Romance Cathédrale is one of the major monuments of the art of the Saint Roman Empire. The cathedral was, during nearly 300 years, the place of burial of eight King S and German Empereur S.

It is with the abbey of Whorl that Agnès of Aquitaine took the veil in 1062, after the conflict with papacy.

The December 27th 1146, Bernard de Clairvaux came to Spire to preach the Second crusade in front of the emperor Conrad III, which, allured by the man, crossed at once.

In 1526, the first diet of Whorl ( to also see : Diète of Whorl) leaves with each German prince a certain religious liberty.

In 1529, the second Diet of Whorl makes conclusions less permissive which displease to the disciples Martin Luther. Those protest and become thus Protestant S.

In 1689, the cathedral and the city are almost completely burned by the French troops of Louis XIV.

In 1792 Spire is conquered by the troops revolutionary Frenchwomen. The city will remain French until in 1814, as a sub-prefecture of the department of the Mount-Thunder.
