Whitworth
Whitworth is an Indian reserve located in the administrative area of the Low-Saint-Laurent at the Quebec, to 30 km in the south-east of River-of-Wolf, on the Route transcanadienne.
The Indian reserve the Whitworth one is born in 1877 legally. It takes its name of that of the canton where it is established. The reserve will be however better known under the name of Viger, name which identifies besides still today the band which composes it. This ambiguity comes owing to the fact that in 1827, the government tries first once to interest the Malécites in colonization in their yielding a territory located in the canton of Viger, today in the municipality from Saint-Épiphane. The little of success gained by this operation and the pressure exerted by new interested white colonists to be established in the sector lead the government to resell these grounds in 1870. Besides since 1855, the government projects the reimplantation of Malécites in the canton the Whitworth one and the creation of the reserve, in 1877, concretizes this wish.
The territory identified under the name of Whitworth Indian Reserve on a plan of 1912 will be attended rather than inhabited by Malécites; one thus does not find there a village like such and no permanent resident is there currently. After several decades of inactivity, the band of Viger was reconstituted in 1987 allowing even the recognition of Malécites like eleventh indigenous nation of Quebec, in 1989. The band took the name of First nation malécite of Viger in 1990.
