White Fathers

The White Pères form an apostolic company of life missionaries founded with House-Square (Algérie) in 1868 by the cardinal Charles Martial Lavigerie (1825 - 1892), Archevêque of Algiers. It bears the less known name of Société of the missionaries of Africa .

The white Fathers were characterized by their work in Ethnographie and geography, in the interior of the African continent which was then almost unknown Westerners.

Augustin Hacquard played a great part in the missions in Western Africa and more particularly in current the Mali. It joined in 1896 to the Hourst mission, which was a mission Hydrographique on the Fleuve Niger.

The white Fathers were 2098 in January 1998.
