Whist with the color

The Whist with the color , often called Whist simply, is a set of liftings practitioner with four players with a set of 52 charts. It is one of the multiple alternatives of the Whist, and remained popular in Belgium.

Many players

The Whist with the color is generally played four players. It is however possible to play five or six players, but at this time, there is one or two died , these players waiting to be able to take share with the part to replace one or two others according to a cycle to be defined, for example after a full rotation (four) of give. To facilitate the counting of the points, a solution consists in grouping the additional player with one of the 4 basic players.

The solution with five or six players is not very interesting, because the play is strong idle and of less interest. It is preferable to try to constitute two tables of sets of four people.

Give

Is done successively by each one while going towards the left (clockwise), the donor distributes four charts, then five and to finish four charts with each player after having made " couper" optionally by its opposite. Each player having thus thirteen charts, out of the package of 52.

Goal of the play

During a packing (two people), it is necessary to do the utmost of folds and at least those which are announced. In the same way, it there with the possibility of playing in solo and of doing the utmost of folds and at least those which are announced. To only play or two separately and not to make any fold (small and great misery) or one or two folds by playing the piccolo or the piccolissimo.

Value of the charts

In decreasing order from the ace, king, lady, servant, ten ........ until both.

Value of the colors

Moreover stronger with weakest, heart , square , clover ♣, spade ♠.

Beginning of the play, advertisements

1st turn: Each player on the basis of the first on the left of the donor and in the direction horlogic must announce " passes-trou" (it does not have three aces) or " trou" (it has 3 aces) or " hole royal" (it has four aces). See HOLE, the hole or royal hole is dominating on all the other proposals, it can however be countered by great misery or great misery on table, that any of the four players can announce. 2nd turn: The first player after the donor, can make an ADVERTISEMENT color or it WAITS or it PASSES. A player proposes a color and one of the following can PACK it. He then becomes the partner of the advertiser of the color, and they must with them two carry out a minimum of eight folds. This contract can be exceeded by another proposal packed by another player in a higher color, at this time the minimum number of folds is always of eight. On the other hand if the announced proposal is in a color lower than that announced previously, the number of folds to be realized by the two partners must be higher of a fold compared to the number of folds of the higher color. What means that there can be higher bid, even many folds in a higher color, or more one fold in a lower color. The first player who waited at the time of this second turn cannot make any other proposal any more, except becoming packer of a not-packed proposal of the three other players.

At the time of this second turn, the players who do not make a proposal for a possible packing, must obligatorily announce their proposal to play without partner: SMALL MISERY *** PICCOLISSIMO *** PICCOLO *** GREAT MISERY *** ABUNDANCE *** SOLO-CHELEM.

3rd turn: Player which did not pass or did not await, and whose proposal for a color was not followed of a packing or if there were indeed a packing but not followed effect after the higher bids, can announce a SOLO (six folds minimum). It is possible that another player carries out a higher bid for another SOLO, that is to say because its color is higher or then in a lower color but with a fold moreover.

So before the SOLO proposal, there had been a packing, this last could be carried out in so far as the partners of packing propose at this time a minimum of ten folds. If not it is the SOLO which becomes higher than packing.

A player having proposed a color with the 2nd turn and which was not packed, with the possibility with the 3rd turn of becoming packer in another lower or higher color.

Definitions of the terms and plays possible

; Asset: The color of the asset is defined in the proposal of the player and the chart is dominating by its value in its color, and on all the values of the other colors. ; To cross: If a player does not have or does not have any more the sunken color, it will be able or to cut (C. - with. - D. to put an asset) or to put another chart of its choice (it is not obligatory to cross, it is thus possible to make the dead end). If a player crossed, it gains the fold unless another player overtrumping with an asset of higher value. ; Announces: At the time of the second round one of the players makes an advertisement in a color with an aim of seeking a partner to make with them two a minimum of eight folds, it is of habit to think that which makes the advertisement with the possibility of only making with him five folds, its partner carrying out the three other folds (but this is not at all a rule).

In the same way, the partner is supposed to have a chart of the announced color.
If packing is concretized, the color becomes the asset.
; Waits: At the time of the second round, the player who is the first after the donor with the possibility of awaiting a full rotation before deciding to pack another player who made an advertisement. The player who waited, does not have any more the possibility of playing another game but packing or of passing, any other proposal being excluded. ; Passes: A player who does not have play in his hand, known as that it passes, as of this moment it will not be able to make any more any packing or play in solo. ; To pack: After an advertisement of color of another player, there is thus the possibility of packing that which made the proposal and of becoming its partner to make eight folds with two at least, or more according to the higher bids, it is only the packer who can make the higher bid or it gives up and lets make the play of the other proposal. ; Hole and royal Hole: One of the players has three aces and he announced hole , it is the holder of the fourth ace (called the bouchor) which will define the color of the asset, and it is not necessarily in the color of its ace, the bouchor begins the part and he does not have the obligation to start by an asset, nor still in the color of his ace.
If one of the players has four aces, it announces royal Trou and it will have as partner rams that which has king of hearts (or it heart… if the king… is already had by the player which has the four aces), the asset is obligatorily the heart. The bouchor starts the part but without obligation to begin with the king… heart.
In both cases, Hole or Royal Hole, the minimum number of folds to realize is of new.
Only Great Misery or Great Misery on table takes precedence over the Hole or Royal Hole, except this exception the Hole or Royal Hole is played obligatorily.
; Abundance: This proposal is announced with the 2nd turn and the player must carry out in solo nine folds in the color which it defines and which becomes the asset, it is him which starts in the part, another player can announce an abundance of nine folds in a higher color or more one fold in a lower color. ; Solo-slam: The solo-slam is obligatorily announced with the 2nd turn and the player commits himself making in solo the thirteen folds. There is no asset. ; Small Misery: The player engages has not to make any fold (on the twelve), it does not have there an asset, before the part, each player draws aside a chart (hidden side), that which it seems to him to harm his play to make make a fold with that which proposed small misery. A second player can also propose a small misery, each one playing for oneself. ; Great Misery: The player commits himself not making any fold (on the thirteen), it does not have there an asset, it does not have there a variation of chart. The player with the possibility of also announcing Great misery on table , i.e. after the first fold and the first chart sunken for second fold, it will have to deposit on the table, within sight of the other players, all its remaining charts (twelve) and the part continues, each player adversary of the great misery directing his play while profiting from the sight of the spread out charts. ; Piccolissimo: Is played in solo or two (every man for himself), without asset, the advertiser (S) having to take only two folds minimum and maximum, with its thirteen charts. ; Piccolo: Is played in solo or two (every man for himself), without asset, the advertiser (S) having to take only one fold minimum and maximum, with its thirteen charts. ; Solo: The player having announced a color and not having been packed, or the player who had made a packed advertisement but which was cancelled by a higher bid, can propose to carry out six folds minimum in solo, another player can carry out a solo of six folds in a higher color or more one fold in a lower color, with a maximum of eight folds.

Priority and classification of the advertisements:

Classification of weakest with the strongest proposal.

  1. Packing.

  2. Solo.
  3. Small Misery.
  4. Solo eight folds on Small Misery.
  5. Piccolissimo.
  6. Piccolo.
  7. Abundance.
  8. Great Misery.
  9. Great Misery on Hole.
  10. Great Misery on Table.
  11. Great Misery on Hole on Table.
  12. Solo-Slam.

Note: Hole or Royal Hole must always be played in priority, even if there are a Great Misery or Great Misery on table. Indeed, it is too simple to announce a play of misery when one knows or are the 4 aces.

Scale of the points of the Whist

This scale makes it possible to check with each part if the counting of the points is correctly carried out, indeed the total of the positive points must always be equal on the whole negative points. For the plays being able to be played in solo, but possibly by two players it is planned in the scale, for example for a small misery:
  • Only. = points by gaining and three losers, or misery only lost
  • put
  • 2. /2 gag. = two miseries with two gaining.
  • put
  • 2. /1 gag. = two miseries with only one gaining.
  • put
  • 2. /2 per. = two lost miseries with two.
  • put
  • 2. /1 per. = two miseries with only one lost.

Alternatives

The play of Whist has many alternatives. The rules above are only one of them. The alternatives quoted below can be introduced. Many other scales are also found. When you play with players whom you do not know, think of checking the alternatives used.

HOLE: Certain tables require only 8 folds when one " bouche" in the 4th ACE.

TRINKET: After a hole, one can carry out one gives or a turn of gives Brimborion . The donor distributes 19 charts (6, 5,6) to the other players and keeps the last. Once gives it carried out, the players give each one 4 charts to the donor.

WHITE PLAY: When a player has neither figures (king/lady/servant) nor ace, it can declare a play white. The charts are redistributed, by the same donor or the following donor and the scale of give following can be doubled.

PICCOLO/PICCOLISSIMO: Certain tables play only with Piccollo, others use neither Picollo, nor Picollissimo

ABUNDANCE AGAINST GREAT MISERY: It is found sometimes that abundance with 10 folds cuts down great misery. To note that one can find other modifications in the hierarchy of the biddings such as the piccolissimo being between solo 6 and solo 7 (and thus, in lower part of the small misery)

LATE ADVERTISEMENTS: When it is a question of beating a lower bidding, one sometimes authorizes to tardily announce an abundance, a misery,… For example, after a packing countered by a misery, one can authorize one of packed to announce an abundance.

MORE THAN 8 FOLDS IN SOLO: Certain tables count all the folds carried out in solo instead of limiting itself to a maximum of 8 entered folds.

GENERAL MISERY: When no advertisement is made, instead of redistributing the charts, one can declare a general misery (the term can vary) where the goal is not to make certain folds. According to the cases, it will be necessary to avoid making 6th and the 12th fold or 1st, 7th and 13th folds (but of other alternatives can exist)
