USS Entreprise is on mission of exploration to the borders the galaxy. On the way, he discovers " the box noire" valiant S, a lost land vessel 200 years ago. The recorder is hardly functional, but indicates that the Valiant one had been swept by " a storm magnétique". It contains the data of the last moments on board unfortunate vessel and watch which the crew had frantically sought of information on the extrasensory perception in the trip computer. The band finishes with the captain of Valiant ordering the self-destruction.
Kirk decides that they must know what arrived at Valiant and the Company crosses the edge of the galaxy. It meets a strange barrier, which causes serious electric damage with the systems of the vessel and the ship is forced to move back. At the same time, the Navigator Gary Mitchell and the psychiatrist of the edge Doctor Elisabeth Dehner all two the are left unconscious ones by the effect of the magnetic field. Their alarm clocks, they start soon to show remarkable psychic capacities.
A little later Mitchell becomes increasingly arrogant and hostile towards the remainder of the crew, informant it became divine. He applies his desires with telepathic and telekinesic capacities alarming. Spock believes that the Valiant one can have tested the same phenomenon. The other team members must have destroyed the vessel to prevent these capacities to be propagated in the galaxy.
To help it to neutralize Mitchell, Kirk calls upon the humanity of Doctor Dehner. As Mitchell prepares to kill Kirk, Dehner attacks Mitchell to weaken it. Mitchell kills Dehner, but before it can reload and use its capacities, of the explosions, caused by Kirk, start the slip of rocks which buries and kills Mitchell.
Later, Kirk indicates in its newspaper which as well Dehner as Mitchell gave their life " by making them devoir."
Kirk: " Would have you kindness to cease this play irritating which exasperates me, Mr Spock."
Spock: " Irritant? … Ah yes, one of your strange émotions."
Kirk: " Total capacity, i.e. corruption totale."
Kirk: " I want that its end is quoted in example. He had not asked what is to him arrivé."
Spock: " I am sorry for him. "
Kirk: " I believe that after all, there is hope for you, Mr Spock."
The corruption of the any power for any being.
Indeed a year before, the layings of NBC had rejected a first pilot " The Cage " with Jeffrey Hunter in the role of the captain Christopher Pike, judging this episode far too cerebral for normal Peking.
One will need all the audacity and the roublardise of Roddenberry and the producer Oscar Katz to convince the studio to consider a second pilot. The weapon is simple, Oscar Katz puts the leaders of NBC at the foot of the wall: He recalls them that it is them which chose the script of the first pilot among the three proposed at the beginning (" The Cage " , " The Omega Glory " & " Mudd' S Women "). On Friday, March 26, 1965, NBC makes a single decision and requires of Gene Roddenberry a new pilot, ever seen in the history of the TV!
Gene Roddenberry then revises immediately its copy, and board on two scripts: " The Omega Glory" & " Mudd' S Women" , but it is that of his/her old friend and scenario writer Sam A. Peeples which carries the setting: " Where No man Has Gone Before".
The first script is written on May 27th, 1965, follow-up of a second dated June 16th. The final version will be given on June 28th, then again revised the 8/9 and 14 July 15th.
Does turning thus begin in July 1965 under the direction from James Goldstone, with in the high-speed motorboat the Canadian actor William Shatner in the role of the Capitaine James T. (R.?) Kirk, substitute outgoing Jeffrey Hunter of the role because his wife did not like the show. William Shatner was the third lists some for the attribution of the role of James T. Kirk; among the applicants appear the actors Jack Lord (" Dr. No " , " Hawaii organizes State ") and Lloyd Bridges (" Hot Shots! ").
Majel Barrett in the role of " Number one " it is évincée also, a woman with the capacity was too daring for the time and the studio. But it is the price which Gene had to pay to preserve an essential character, mythical Mr. Spock always interpreted by Leonard Nimoy - a character that the studio wants to eliminate at all costs, because of satanic appearance that its Oreille S confers to him pointed!
This episode marks also the first appearance of the lieutenant Hikaru Sulu (here at the scientific post of officer) interprêté by George Takei, and that of the lieutenant ordering Montgomery " Scotty" Scott (chief-engineer) incarnated by James Doohan.
The script of Peeples being more directed action than " The Cage " , the result likes NBC, which in January 1966 gives finally green light for " Trek" star; !
Although " Where No Man Has Gone Before" is the pilot of the series, he did not have the privilege to be the first diffused episode Star Trek. It is " The Man Trap " who will gain this honor on September 8th, 1966. When with " Where No Man Has Gone Before" , it was diffused later, on September 22nd, 1966, against any form of logic and coherence, since Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) does not appear there, that the uniforms are still inherited " The Cage " , without speaking about a summary make-up of Spock and without nuance.
Today, there would exist two versions of " Where No Man Has Gone Before" .
The first that we all know, via the recent repeat broadcasts and the the DVD, then another longest, that which Gene Roddenberry presented to the studio.
It starts with a sight of our galaxy with the voice of Shatner introducing the mission of the vessel, without however indicating an entry in its log book. The following scene is that of the part of failures between Spock & Kirk. The recovery of the recorder of edge of the S Valiant is followed from there, then the image is immobilized to leave room to fast credits, pointing out that of " The Cage" … The remainder of the additional scenes represents the crew in the corridors when the vessel passes in Red Alert, and introduced important characters like Lt Gary Mitchell (Gary Lockwood), Dr. Mark Piper (Paul Fix) and the physicist Sulu (George Takei). One will note also a topic of Star Trek orchestrated differently by Alexander Courage and a music of end ever heard in the series since.
Today, " Where No Man Has Gone Before" is an invaluable episode, as well from a historical point of view, as set of themes. Gene Roddenberry mingled already learnedly the aspect fun with it and relaxed SF of its time and the reflections thorough and adult on the mankind of which it was deprived up to now. A stage was reached, a phenomenon of the pop culture had just been born…
the novel " Q-Squared " (not-gun) reveals that the galactic barrier captured the gasoline of Q after a confrontation with Trelane dispersed it through the Espace and the Temps. Q did not manage to escape the barrier when it was fixed at a team member of the S Valiant]], but that point will reach 2 centuries later while being fixed at Mitchell and Dehner.
