The Jewish one has the appearance of a prototype of " grand opera français" , in five acts with ballet, kind that this opera - created in 1835 in Paris - inaugurates and who will know a large posterity during the XIXe century. The opera is composed on a booklet of Eugene Scribe. The action is at the time of the Council of Constancy in 1414; complicated and deprived of logic, it puts in scene the descent into Hell and the judgment at roughing-hew of a Jewish goldsmith, Eléazar and of her Rachel daughter, from which one will learn that it is in fact only her adopted girl, who is allured and abandoned by a victorious Christian prince of Hussites, Léopold, in addition married with the Princess Eudoxie niece from the Emperor. The catholic camp is represented by a powerful ecclesiastic, the cardinal of Brogni which, rather quite disposed, does not manage to save those that, for perfectly ridiculous reasons the Council condemned. Hatreds are reciprocal, the character of Eleazar conveys stereotypes anti-semites and the improbabilities are innumerable. The partition is of an exceptional quality. The text of the aria of IVe act, sung by Eléazar
<
was written by the tenor Adolphe Nourrit so that the syllables, in particular the vowels, can correspond well to its voice.
This aria marked the spirits much and had a literary posterity in the research of the wasted time of Proust. “Rachel-when-of-Lord”, is the nickname which the narrator had given to a small prostitute that the tenancière of the brothel had praised to him like Jewish. Some tome cheeses of research further, the narrator recognizes this " Rachel-when-of-Seigneur" in the person of the mistress of her friend Robert of Saint-Wolf.
