It is necessary to announce to several times, the passage of troops in Westrehem. In 1373, the army of the Duke of LANCASTER, after having made a vain demonstration against the town of Surface came in Rely (a nearby village), and from there, went towards Fiefs while crossing Westrehem which was plundered. May 8th, 1641, the marshal of Meillerage, with an army from 20 to 25000 men, came to camp in Febvin. The following day, it went on Aire and put the seat in front of this city.
The origin of the name:
Westrehem comes from Wester, which means western and hem (derivative of heim i.e. village) is village of the west or rather hamlet of the west. It is located at the west of an old Roman way: The Brunehaut roadway. Perhaps of Anglo-Saxon origin, the agglomeration is called westernehem in 1087. During centuries the writing of the name frequently changed: Westrehem (1240), Westerehem (1430), Westerhem (1518), Westochen (1553), Westrem, (1664) and Westrehem (1570). Since it did not change a name any more.
