Western New Guinea
Western New Guinea (in Indonésien: Papua Barat , in English West Papua ) is a province of the Indonesia in the extreme-Western part of the New Guinea which covers all the peninsula known as Vogelkop (“head of bird”) and the surrounding islands. It was separate, under the initial name of Irian Jaya Western , of the province of New Guinea, old Irian-Jaya, in February 2003. This separation is particularly discussed by the independence movement Organisasi Papua Merdeka (" organization for New Guinea libre") or CPM.
The province changed its name in February 2007. A plenary session of the provincial assembly must still legalize it.
The province counts approximately 800.000 inhabitants. Its capital is Manokwari.
