The West Germany was the abstract name given to the the Federal Republic of Germany between 1949 and 1990. For this period existed another German State called the German Democratic republic or GDR (in German GDR) (and informellement named: East Germany ).

This division resulted from the Occupation of Germany after the Second world war and the Cold war which followed. The constitutional law of May 23rd, 1949 which created the Federal Republic of Germany starting from the three zones of American occupation, British and French, made by its article 23 of the Large-Berlin a federal Land. The constitution was applied unilaterally in 1950 in West Berlin, and the first legislative elections aurent place on December 3rd, 1950.
Become principal a member of NATO after its adhesion in 1955, this state and GDR were one of the points of crystallization of the Cold war.
Called Wirtschaftswunder, the growth of the West Germany made that quickly this country becomes the third world economy.
Since October 3rd, 1990, the German Democratic republic was built-in the German Federal republic and the resulting country is simply called “Germany”.
