The West Caribbean (sometimes shortened in West ) (Code AITA: YH ; Code ICAO: WCW) is a regional Airline company Colombia, based with Medellín (Colombia) - which recently began from the international flights (like Panama - Fort-de-France). A crash landing of a MD-82 on this way made 161 died the August 16th 2005 on this last way. The Colombian company West Caribbean “had been authorized to make a flight charter between Panama and Fort-de-France (Martinique) on the one hand and Point-with-Clown (Guadeloupe) on the other hand, since the beginning of spring 2005” , declared Mr. Dominique Perben, French Minister for Transport, adding that this flight “had been ordered by an travel agency inhabitant of Martinique” (the agency Globe Trotters of River-Salted).

It is about the second fatal accident in 2005 for West Carribean, after the fall in March of biturbo-propellers Let-410, which had had problems on takeoff in the island Old Providence and had been crushed against a mountain. The accident had made eight died including two team members and six of the twelve passengers.

Founded the December 29th 1998 by contractors who sought to develop the Archipel of San Andrés and Santa Catalina, under the name of West Caribbean Airways SA , based in Medellín since 2000.

The company was already blamed several time for noncompliance with the safety regulations. Its planes were blocked during one week for control at the time of the first accident.

West declares on its Internet site a fleet including/understanding three planes McDonnell Douglas: two MD-81 (with a capacity of 152 passengers) and a MD-82 with a capacity of 155 passengers, two ATR -42 with 47 passengers each one like 6 planes Let-410 (manufactured in Czech Republic), of 19 passengers each one.

Accidents

An apparatus MC Donell Douglas of West Caribbean Airways in departure of Panama for Martinique was crushed in Venezuela Tuesday, August 16, 2005 towards 3:00 of the morning. 152 people were on board apparatus. The pilot would have announced problems of engine to the tower of control of Caracas, the radio operator contact was cut ten minutes later.

A twin-engine apparatus of West Caribbean Airways was crashé on takeoff in the month of March 2005 on the island of Old Providence in Caribbean water of Colombia. The accident because death of eight people among whom the pilot and the copilot, as well as a 3 years old little boy. Six people survived the crash landing. The passengers were tourists on the way for another Colombian island, San Andres.
