Wervicq-South
Wervicq-South is a common French, located in the department of the Northern (59) and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Its inhabitants is called Wervicquois.
Geography
Located at 15 kilometers in the north of Lille and at 20 kilometers in the south-east of Ypres, Wervicq-South is a very old city.
The commune is separated from the town of Wervik in Belgium by the Lys, while Bousbecque, Comines, Halluin, Linselles as Roncq is neighbouring communes.
History
Named by the route of Antonin and the Table of Peutinger (3rd century), Viroviacum, today Wervicq, are old. It is there that the Roman Voie of Tournai in Cassel crossed the Lys (Affluent of the the Scheldt). Provided with a strengthened station which one found traces, it is named by Sanderus in its marvellous " Flandria illustrata " who gives a sight of it to the 17th century.
During centuries, it depended on the Counts de Flandre, and for this reason on kings de France, until in 1527, where the Traité of Madrid made it pass under the sovereignty of the empire.
Dependence of the Spain, it was cut into two by the conquest of Louis XIV in 1667. From there, the principal Agglomeration, located on left bank, followed the fate of the Belgian provinces, while the suburb of Right Bank, attached to the maritime Flanders, became common thereafter department of North, under the name of Wervicq-South, with current territorial cutting, instituted by the Constituante in 1790.
The festival of Jehan Van d' Helle
Wervicq-south remembers that it was at the 16th century the principal production center of Tabac of EUROPE and each year, with the rise, the festival of Jehan Van d' Helle (legendary Wervicquois giant which, according to the local Mythologie, would have been born in the sheets of tobacco of Blaton) unrolls its records in the main arteries of the Commune.
