Contrary to MPEG-4 which describes a format of video coding, MPEG-7 is a Norme of description of which the goal is to facilitate the Indexation and it multi-media document retrieval. Format MPEG-7 includes/understands three principal elements:

  • a whole of descriptors allowing the multi-media description of the contents:

    • visual Descriptors, encodant information of Color, Texture, form or movement.
    • audio Descriptors, encodant the stamp, the spectrum, or of the elements plus high level like the melody or the Word.
  • a language of description of the multimedia contents: DDL (Description Language Definition). DDL is a derivative of the format of beaconing XML Schema.

  • Of the elements, called Description Designs (DS), defining semantics and the relations between descriptors and DS:

    • the segments make it possible to define the decomposition space-time of the video media (image, plan, sequences, etc)
    • information authors: what makes it possible to provide information " bibliographiques" on media (title, author, free description, etc)
    • physical information (principle of coding of media, cuts, resolution, etc).

Beyond these simple descriptors, one can find elements more elaborate like summaries of the media (in various forms), of the approaches of personalization, etc

Format MPEG-7 is currently only used very little in the general public applications. Certain applications MPEG-7 exist with the state of prototype (IBM Video annotation, Ricoh Movie Tool ().

The standard TV-anytime developed for the description of contents of Télévision uses MPEG-7.
