Welsh alphabet

The Welsh alphabet (Yr Wyddor) comprises 28 letters, including 7 vowels, which are:

The letter J is seldom accepted in the Welsh orthography, although many purists write it " Si" , as in " Siapan" (Japan) for Japan. The letter K is in a similar position, though its redundancy (lay-off) makes it even less acceptable for purists. Its use is limited almost exclusively in the words starting with " kilo-" , although one rather uses the orthographies with the letter C .

One does not consider accentuated vowels of the distinct letters. The diacritic of Welsh include/understand the circumflex accents ( ^ , for long vowels in some words), acute, serious or dieresis. These last three are omitted of a less formal writing.

While the letters " CH, dd, FF, ng, L, pH, Rh, th" each one is written with two letters (called Digramme S), one regards them as simple letters. Let us consider Llanelli , a city of the south of the Wales. It comprises only 6 letters in Welsh, compared with 8 letters in English. Consequently, each digraph takes only one simple space in the cross Mots Welsh. Another example: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch has 58 letters in English, but 51 in Welsh (in one or the other case, it is the longest place name of the the United Kingdom).

The sorting is made in the correspondence with the alphabet. For example, the comes before ly , which comes before lla , which comes before my . The automated sorting can from time to time be complicated because the additional details can be necessary to distinguish a true digraph from a juxtaposition of letters; for example llom comes after llong (in which the ng is the letter between " g" and " h") but before " llongyfarch" (in which the " n" and the " g" are separate letters).
