Welsh Not
The Welsh Not or Welsh Notes , was a piece of wood on which was registered letters WN, that one suspended on the neck of the children who spoke Welsh in certain Welsh schools about the 19th century.
The object was given to the surprised child with speaking Welsh, who was to then get rid some by transmitting it to another that he would have intended itself to speak Welsh. At the weekend that which held the object was whipped, and generally a public.
The goal of this object was to discourage the use of Welsh at one time when it was considered that the instruction could be given only in English. The process which had been introduced following the parliamentary report of 1847 in connection with education in Wales, will be adopted in the French schools, in Brittany inter alia (see the article Symbole (Breton language)).
