Weissensee (lake)

The Weissensee is a lake in Carinthie located close to the the Alps de Gailtal, in Austria, in the north of Hermagor. With 930 meters above the sea level, Weissensee is the lake highest of Carinthie to bathe. Weissensee has length a 11,6 km and its surface is approximately 6,5 km ². Only one third of its bank of 23 km is urbanized, the remainder is protected. The lake has two permanent affluents (Praditzbach and Mühlbach) and several underground sources. In the east Weißenbach drains Weissensee towards the Drave.
A network of and VTT hiking trails of several kilometers and all degrees of difficulty surrounds the lake. Camp-site is possible.
In winter, the lake offers the surface of the largest ice of the Alps, with many sporting events like the famous Elfstedentocht.
