Production

The album was recorded in August and September 1993 in Electric Lady Studios, with New York and was produced by Ric Ocasek, former singer of the formation New wave The Cars, become producer after a not very profitable career solo.

The four members of Weezer at the time of this disc were: Rivers Cuomo (voice and guitar), Beautiful Brian (guitar), Matt Sharp (low) and Patrick Wilson (battery). All take part in the choruses on this disc, which was one of brand names of Weezer of the first years.

The second guitarist of the history of the group, Brian Beautiful, was integrated 3 days before the sessions in studio. He replaced Jason Cropper. This last is credited to have composed the intro of My Name is Jonas . Rivers Cuomo rejoué all the tracks of guitars which had recorded Cropper. According to Ric Ocasek, this exercise was done in the same day, for the ten songs. If Brian Bell does not play on this album, one can however hear his voice in the “backing vocals”.

Art

The photograph of the Blue Album , famous for its simplicity, is credited in Peter Gowland. According to Karl Koch, the fifth not-official member of the group, which achieves the functions of Webmaster, photographer and archivist, the initial idea of Rivers Cuomo was to make wear to a whole an identical shirt, in an attempt to imitate the small pocket of a cheap compilation of the Beach Boys entitled Do It Again . The photo catch ultimement to illustrate the album rather points out the first disc of the group The Feelies, Crazy Rhythms .

Inside the booklet, one can see a photograph of the “garage”, which was the room of practice of Weezer with Los Angeles in California. It is about an illustration of the eighth part of the album, In The Garage (“ I got posters one the wall/My favorite rock'n'roll group KIS/I got Ace Frehley/And I got Peter Criss ”) since one can see there a poster of KIS on the wall. The same garage appears in the Vidéo-clip third extract of the album, for the part Say It Ain' T So . The garage was demolished in 2002 after an ultimate party between its walls, in which Weezer did not take part.

Extracts

The three extracts of Blue Album are, in the order: Undone (The Song Sweater) at the summer 1994, Buddy Holly in November 1994, and Say It Ain' T So in 1995. The first two clips are the work of the Cinéaste Spike Jonze, which had previously produced the clip of Cannonball for The Breeders in 1993 and which was to be made known at the summer 1994 for Sabotage of the Beastie Boys. The clips of Jonze strongly contributed to the success of Weezer and this first album. It is Buddy Holly , a clip which mixed images of the group with extracts of the old American television program Happy Days, immediately added to the heavy rotation of MTV, which exploded the sales of Blue Album.

The first extract, Undone (The Song Sweater) , received much less visibility, but was an appreciable success in the circuit of the North-American collegial radios.

Sophie Muller produced the clip of Say It Ain' T So .
