Weddell island
The island Weddell (in English Weddel Island , in Spanish Isla San Jose ) is the third larger island of the Falklands (Falkland Islands), with a surface of 254 km ². It is located at the west of the Western island of Falkland. Until the end of the 19th century, it known under the name of island Swan ( Swan Island ), a name which lent to confusion with the Swan islands, was located they on other side of the Western Falkland island. Weddel is named according to the explorer and British navigator James Weddell which visited the Falklands with the beginning of the year 1800 and is known for its voyages in the Antarctic (the Mer of Weddell and the Phoque of Weddell also bear its name)
The small population of the island lives with the Weddell Settlement on the Eastern coast, the remainder of the island being used as pasture with sheep.
Fauna
Like several other islands of the Falklands, the Weddell island is known for its wild life with Manchot S, Sea lion S and Dauphin S.
