A webring is a collection of Web sites being everywhere on Internet joined by a NavBar in a basic mode. The code of NavBar (also known under the name of SSNB) is a piece of JavaScript (or HTML) which makes it possible the Net surfer to click on a bond to go to the following, precedent, or on a random site. Through this, the Net surfer can possibly sail in all WebRing, finishing where it started, here is the reason of his name.

The webrings are often similar groups of sites. The majority of WebRings follow same topic (for example the Paganisme, the trades, HTML, the Baseball, Simpsons, etc) to provide a great base of information on only one subject which is sometimes difficult to find on large a Search engine. The Net surfer, in other words, can visit several sites on the same subject without having to seek chancun individually them.

Idée/L' history

The original webring was conceived by Sage Weil which used its own script cgi in May, 1994. The idea was based on a named similar structure EUROPa (Expanding Unidirectional Ring Off Pages). The script of Weil was so popular that in June, 1995, Weil created WebRing, which was officially propelled eight years later. In 1997, Weil sold WebRing in Starseed, Inc.

In 1998 Starseed acquired Geocities, which did not make major changes with the system any more. However a few months later, at the beginning of 1999, Yahoo! bought Geocities, and eighteen months after acquisition, the September 5th, 2000, Yahoo! revealed a webring entirely revised, known under the name of Yahoo! WebRing.

What many people do not know it is only the April 15th, Yahoo! its support of WebRing stopped, leaving it with an original technician of webring.org. The October 12th, 2001, It revealed WebRing without the influence of Yahoo!.
