Biography

Beginnings

After having begun its career on two wheels, Mark Webber passes on four wheels as from 1991, when he discovers the Karting. In 1994, at 18 years, it disputes the championship of Australia of Formule Ford, where its good performances enable him to make the great jump towards England. In 1996, for its second season in England, it finishes 2nd British championship of Ford Formula, but especially, it gains the Formula Ford Festival Brands Hatch, kind of semi-official World cup of the speciality. In 1997, Mark Webber reaches famous the British championship of Formula 3, but in spite of good performances, finds itself quickly confronted with the lack of budget. During the summer, it is about to have to put a term at its season if it is not with its career, when it receives a providential financial nudge in the right direction on behalf of David Campese, the legend of Australian Rugby. That enables him to finish its season in the 4th place of general classification, and to be located by the firm Mercedes, which decides to make of him one of its official pilots in the championship TRUSTED WP for the season 1998.

Associated with Bernd Schneider, Mark Webber gains 5 races, but must be inclined with the championship behind the other duet Mercedes, made up of Klaus Ludwig and Ricardo Zonta. In 1999, Mercedes withdraws championship TRUSTED WP to concentrate its efforts on the 24 Hours of Mans. But the participation of Webber in Mans is not far from being concluded by a drama. Because of an aerodynamic defect, the Mercedes of Mark Webber leaves in a series loops twice (during the tests and of the warm-up of Saturday morning). It is left there each time without the least wound. To note that during the race, the Scottish pilot Peter Dumbreck will know the same mishap on another car of the mark.

Cooled by its experiment in Mans, Mark Webber decides to find the single-seater. In 2000, it is recruited by the stable of Formule 3000 Eurobet Arrows (regarded as the junior team of the stable of F1 Arrows), directed by its compatriot Paul Stoddart. Taking into account the bonds between Eurobet Arrows and Arrows F1, it also carries out this year its first steps in Formule 1, as a pilot tester. Third of the final classification for its first season in the discipline, Mark Webber seems the great revelation of the championship. That is worth to him to become pilot tester for the stable Benetton F1 with the end of the year, a position which is not called into question when a few months later, Renault repurchases Benetton. Flavio Briatore takes it even under its wing while making him sign a contract of long-term management. In parallel, it disputes a second season of F3000 on behalf of the stable Super Nova. But taking into account its statute of favorite of the championship, Webber disappoints by making several pilot errors which cost him the title, for the benefit of the British Justin Wilson.

Formula 1

In 2002, Briatore finances the accession of Webber to Formula 1 while placing it in the small stable Minardi, then held by Paul Stoddart, an old knowledge of Mark. It is highlighted as of its first GP, disputed at his place in Melbourne. Making profitable a general pile-up at the beginning which eliminates the large one from the group, it finishes in the 5th place, after having resisted in end of the road the attacks of Mika Salo on a Toyota a priori more performance. To greet this small exploit, the organizers make a distorsion with the protocol while allowing Mark Webber and Paul Stoddart to celebrate their performance on the podium (little time after the " vrai" podium of the winners). Even if it is not able to renew this performance throughout the season, Webber continues to impress favorably, and is affirmed like the revelation of the year.

In 2003, it leaves Minardi to join the British stable Jaguar Racing. Webber confirms its potential by multiplying the blows of glare in qualification and largely dominating its fellow-member Antonio Pizzonia (then later Justin Wilson after the dismissal of Pizzonia). But its performances with the tests are seldom followed beautiful races, without it being known too much if this shift is the fact of the car or its pilot. It finishes all the same 10th championship with 17 points.

After new a solid season in Jaguar in 2004 (13th with 7 points), it is recruited by the stable Williams - BMW in 2005. But very waited, Webber disappoints somewhat by again showing a certain shift between its beautiful performances with the tests and its races, harder, often peppered with incidents and errors. Always at Williams in 2006, Mark Webber is shown under a better day, but, by the fault of the lack of the unreliability of its mounting, does not manage to concretize its beautiful performances by good performances.

In 2007, Mark Webber will join the stable Red Bull Racing. A team which he knows already partly, because resulting from the repurchase of the old Jaguar.Lors stable of the Grand Prix of Japan of which he could postulate with a first victory he hangs unfortunately with Sebastian Vettel whereas he was 2nd.
